Buje is a small town at only 13 kilometers distance from Umag, situated on top of a hill, which was settled as early as in Roman times. Due to its strategic location, it used to be called «The Watchman of Istria» in the past.
Venetian palaces surround the main town square and along with the Baroque Parish Church of St. Servul from the 16th century there is also an interesting St. Mary Church from the 15th century in the suburbs. The legend says that it was built at that unusual place, because the Gothic statue of the Mother of God, acquired by the villagers for the new church, disappeared during the night from the originally selected location and reappeared at the present location of the church. The City Museum offers its visitors diverse ethnographical collections and exhibitions dedicated to traditional crafts.
The town of Buje is an interesting sightseeing place, in particular due to its position on top of a hill at 222 m above sea level, offering a view of terrace hills and fields, vineyards and olive groves. The whole area is the most well known wine-growing region in Istria with numerous wine cellars (24 wine roads) and agro-tourism. The excursions to gastronomy places provide a special experience, where famous truffles, game, quality Istrian smoked ham and cheese as well as sea – food specialties can be found “at the same table”. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the traditional event “The Days of Grapes” takes place in Buje.
Local tourist agencies are organizing trips to the most famous cave of Upper Bujština – the Leopoldina Cave, horseback riding through the nature, mountain bike tours and mountain climbing.

• Grožnjan is a small Istrian hilltop town situated to the right side of the river Mirna. Among the preserved historical monuments, there are the wall remains, a defense tower, town gates and a Renaissance loggia dating from 1587, as well as a Baroque Parish Church dedicated to Saint Vid and Modest. Some thirty years ago a program of revitalization of Grožnjan, which was at that time almost deserted, was initiated. The program has turned Grožnjan into “the city of artists”, hosting today the International Cultural Centre of the Croatian Musical Youth and offering a number of art galleries and studios. A few years ago an International Summer Film School was opened, too.

The Grožnjan area – characterized by the picturesque olive groves and vineyards, red and yellow soil, the sea, which appears and vanishes from the horizon – is currently considered one of the ecologically most preserved parts of Istria. In its surroundings, there are also four wine roads and mountain bike trails. Horseback riding and hiking through the nature are organized as well.
